Glo Powers Nigerians’ Ambition with An Unforgettable Evening of Undiluted Entertainment

Grammy Nominee, Asake and velvety-voiced singer, Chike were the major highlights of a wonderful evening of fun and laughter when proudly Nigerian telecommunications company, Globacom launched its new marketing campaign dubbed “Powering Ambition”.

Hosted at the Eko Convention Centre, the event aptly titled “An Evening With Glo” showcased Globacom’s 20 year-track record of innovation and impact, while bringing to fore the company’s consistent introduction of product and services aimed at customer satisfaction while demonstrating that it is possible for a Nigerian company to be true innovators, world class and a giant in its own space.

Throughout the classy and colourful evening, that sense of Globacom’s quest to always encourage excellence was evoked in terms of the experience of guests.

From the heavenly walkway, to the lovely cocktail area, the captivating decor to the first-rate entertainment. Each aspect was well-orchestrated and choreographed to leave an indelible memory in the hearts of guests.

The essence of the occasion was well captured by Globacom’s Chairman, Dr Mike Adenuga Jr, who noted that “We are creating a world of limitless opportunities for the millions we serve”.

Dr Adenuga’s hands-on approach to the growth trajectory of the company was then affirmed by Globacom’s Executive Vice Chairman, Mrs Bella Disu in her welcome address.

According to her ” This event is special for many reasons, one being that Globacom celebrated its 20th anniversary this past August. We’re incredibly proud of this feat, which symbolises two decades of our commitment to excellent service delivery, quality, innovation, and outstanding communication strategies.

This remarkable journey and the heights we’ve reached are all thanks to the visionary leadership and tenacity of our founder and Chairman, Dr Mike Adenuga Jr.

” Tonight, we are thrilled to unveil a new communication direction that focuses more on powering and driving ambition, while ensuring success for our existing and future customers. These creative campaigns will undoubtedly inspire accolades for our hardworking Marketing Communications team.

They deserve it, but I’ll let you in on a secret – The creative genius steering us and whipping up most of these ideas is none other than the great guru himself, our Chairman, Dr Mike Adenuga Jr. I’m not sure he would have wanted me to share that, but after 20 years of his creative direction, I think it’s fair to let the cat out of the bag!”

She also used the opportunity to thank partners and stakeholders whose contributions have been essential to Globacom’s success story over the past two decades. While expressing her optimism of what the is to come in the future.

“We are excited about the next 20 years of serving our customers by pre-empting and fulfilling their needs in ways that help them achieve their ambitions. We count on you all to be by our side as we write tomorrow’s success stories”

Explaining further on the new marketing communications campaign, the company noted “one thread holds together the achievements of the past, the wins of the present and the aspirations of the future: Ambition. Ambition is what has brought us this far, and ambition is what will take us farther. This is true, not only for Glo, but the entire world.

Indeed, Globacom has been driven by an ambitious streak to provide qualitative and excellent products and services to Nigerians, that is why till date, it has a bag full of firsts to its credit.

It is this history of achievements that has given birth to the new campaign which is centered on preaching what it has practiced in the last 20 years: Powering Ambition.

To mark this auspicious occasion, the spectacular evening was hosted to inspire Nigerians and its other customers and subscribers worldwide -and it did not disappoint. There was an air of electric anticipation.

From the green carpet where Tobi Bakre and Tope Olowoniran were in charge, interviewing guests and setting the tone for the day, to the event compere, stand-up comedian, Gordons, who was at his hilarious best, churning out off-the-cuff jokes, interacting with guests and putting everyone in stitches with laughter.
Then to the performers! Beejay Sax put everyone in the right mood for the evening when the popular saxophonist reeled out a medley of christian, secular and African tunes that thrilled many in the audience.

Chike too was on point. He worked the audience up steadily with his repertoire of love songs and hit a crescendo before exiting the stage. The star of the night was Asake. He sparkled like a zillion stars.

Showing his craft as an artiste who has excited audiences and filled venues across the globe, he made a grand entrance with his multiple award-breaking song, “Lonely At The Top”.

Of course the audience was on its feet and many who were earlier looking prim and proper on their seat, rushed to the front of the stage.During his pulsating performance, Asake engaged the audience by allowing them sing-along to choruses of his hit numbers, came up-close and personal by dancing into the audience and generally working them into a musical frenzy before leaving with a bang!

That was not all, the hotel’s chefs prepared a feast that tantalized the taste buds of all in attendance, and the aroma wafted through the air, adding to the festive ambiance.

According to Glo, the event was aimed at showing that ” When the ambitions of Nigerians thrive, Nigeria too rises to the heights of its ambitions. And because Nigeria’s unlimited potential is forged in the unlimited ambition of the unwavering Nigerian spirit. It is only right that Nigeria’s one and only Unlimited Network is at the heart and forefront of Powering the Ambition of our great country”.

“Ambition makes people get up every day. Ambition makes us start families, build new dreams against all odds, build ideas into businesses and make immeasurable sacrifices. That is why at Glo. Powering Ambition is much more than just a premise, it is a promise. A promise to keep you above the curve in all manner of ways”.

Without a shadow of doubt, “An Evening With Glo” was a tapestry of joy and a celebration that showcased just a few of the extraordinary talents that abound in Nigeria.

The evening was not only all about food, drinks and entertainment, four customers also smiled home with goodies from Globacom. They were lucky winners of Lagos-London-Lagos business class tickets.

THE GRAND FUNERAL OF MRS CHARITY MADUKA IN LAGOS AND NNEWI

When you have a lived a life worthy of emulation, when you have lived a life of impact and lived all your life in the vineyard of the Lord, there is no shadow of doubt that you will be forever in the hearts of your family, friends and associates because they know full well that you will be resting in the bosom of the Lord.

Though her passing elicited grief from her loved ones especially her friend and widow, Mr. Cosmas Maduka, they were comforted by the sweet memories of her energetic and impactful life. This was the case with Vice President of Coscharis Group,  Mrs. Charity Nchedo Maduka (nee Ikedife) when she was given a most befitting burial with ceremonies in Lagos and Anambra States.

Her funeral began in Lagos with a Night of Tributes at the Queen’s Park Events Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos. As expect for such a woman who had so much clout and connection and related to people of all classes, the venue was filled to the brim. Rev. Elijah Adeyemi declared the programme open with prayers after which daughter in-law of the deceased, Mrs Temitope Maduka came to take the first Bible reading from 2 Cor. 5: 3-5. During the ceremony, speaker after speaker who had the opportunity to mount the podium to say a few words described her variously as very humble, generous, amiable, honest, hardworking and a virtuous woman who was a quintessential Christian.

The service which had segments for songs, hymns and prayers was well-organised and then it was soon time for tributes. Mrs. Ayo Akintade, her friend of 35 years was first to speak. She described the late Mrs Maduka as courageous, a rare gem and true Christian who never backed out in the service of God, even when she had health challenges. “She was an example of what a true Christian should be” Dr. Charles Mgbe, a family friend said the departed was a stabilising factor. She was glue that held the Cosmas Maduka family together and the woman behind the throne.”

In his tribute, the late Mrs. Maduka’s brother, Kenneth Ikedife, recalled that her 63 year-old sister surrendered her life very early to God – accordingly to him, at a time it was almost a taboo to be born-again. Ikedife got an ovation when he informed the guests that his sister’s devotion to God met a match in another firebrand Christian, Dr. Cosmas Maduka, adding that “at a point, their pace as husband and wife was too much for me to follow”.

He disclosed that many beneficiaries of late Mrs. Madukas generosity, including those whose house rent and children’s school fees she paid religiously, have been calling him and crying profusely.” I end up being the one consoling them, rather than them consoling me”.Fred Amobi, who apart from being the Executive Director, Operations, Coscharis Group, has been close to the Madukas, said the departed was a virtuous and capable wife who was more precious than rubies.

Also, Reverend Alfred Davidson from Tema in Ghana, who gave a word of exhortation, said she became alive unto the new death. She was spiritually alive. An exemplary woman every other woman should emulate.
Her loving husband described his late wife as a loving woman, who showed boundless love, strength and care without discrimination.

“From the beginning of our journey, God faithfully led us for 43 years of love in intimate relationship until November 27, 2021 when you peacefully went to sleep in the Lord” “This date has become like 9/11 in my life, as I was obviously under heavy attack, because that is precisely what your sudden departure means to me. “The love we shared, however, gave birth to the institution that is today known as the Coscharis Group, and most importantly, the loving gift of five wonderful children, although we had to wait for six years before Cosmas junior was born. In his vote of thanks, Cosmas Maduka Jnr. Her eldest child said the death of his mother is a huge loss for the family and prayed that God comfort the family at this moment.

According to him “Mum was a remarkable woman; a God-fearing woman. She was a virtuous woman that personified integrity, hard work, and a charitable heart. Her dedication to her family is something I strive to emulate and provide for my family every single day”. Relevant biblical passages were read by the daughter and daughters-in-law of the deceased, including Romans 38, verses 35-39, by Charity Maduka, her daughter. Present at the Night of Tributes very important guests, including former governor of Anambra state, Peter Obi and Chisco Group Chairman, Dr. Chidi Anyaegbu, among many others.

The next day there was a farewell service at the Local Christian Assembly, Ebute Metta, Lagos. Here, members of the church where she gave herself and resources for years had an opportunity to pay their last respects.
Ovation Chairman, Aare Dele Momodu was one of those who joined the congregation in showering encomiums on the departed.

From Lagos, the funeral train moved to the expansive Maduka Residence in Umudim Nnewi , Anambra State where a large marquee had been mounted on a well-manicured field for a Service of Songs. The service, like the other events were well attended. The atmosphere was somber all through the evening.

The final day that her remains were seen on mother earth began with a lying in-state at the residence before the funeral service. The day was a reality check for the Maduka’s that their matriarch was really gone.
The service went on smoothly and she was later committed to earth amidst tears from her closest and dearest.

FORMER SECRETARY TO LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT PRINCESS ADENRELE ADENIRAN- OGUNSANYA GOES HOME IN A BLAZE OF GLORY

Former Secretary to Lagos State Government, Princess Adenrele  Oyebola Adeniran-Ogunsanya was given a most regal and befitting farewell that would be etched on many hearts for years to come.

The lady, who despite her fine taste, great pedigree and station in life was described by many as warm, accommodating and a friend indeed began her journey to be with the Lord when family through a letter appointed ovation International as the Official Magazine and platform for the ceremony and allowed condolence visits to Fiwagboye Court, the Adeniran-Ogunsanya family House in Ikorodu, Lagos State.

former secretary to lagos sate buried

As a dye in-the-wool grassroots politician and activist, who was fondly called the beautiful princess, it was no surprise that funeral rites kicked off with a special Night of Tributes by a group called, Lagos4Lagos.
The group who referred to the deceased as its Matron and strong backer ensured that the event held at the Fiwagboye Court was not only classy but well-attended.

In his Speech, Mr Jide Adediran, Lead Visioner of Lagos4Lagos, revealed that the late Princess Adeniran-Ogunsanya was so close to him that she was called “Mama Jandor”. He noted that she would be greatly missed for her sterling qualities of standing firm no matter whose ox is gored and mixing freely with the masses.

AMIABLE RETIRED OFFICER AND GENTLEMAN CHIEF TUNJI ALAPINI SPEAKS EXCLUSIVE TO OVATION ON TURNING 70

Without any shadow of doubt, he is a loyal officer who served Nigeria with pride and distinction. At seventy, Chief Tunji Alapini NPM, Msc Psc, mni, a retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) still cuts a trim figure like a man in his 50s.

Dashing, humble and amiable, he is probably the only one among his peers who has as many young friends as he has old ones on account of his sterling accomplishments in and out of the uniform. His 70th birthday party, hosted by family and a few friends was classy and glamorous.

AMAJU MELVIN PINNICK SPEAKS ON FOOTBALL, FAMILY AND TURNING FIFT

It was such a huge opportunity for thanksgiving and giving glory to God for astute Football Administrator and President, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Mr. Amaju Melvin Pinnick when he hit 50. For him, though rolling out the drums was necessary, what was highest on the agenda was giving back to society and showing gratitude for the grace of God in his life. Pinnick who describes himself as a child of destiny, was first elected NFF President in September 2014 and insists that he cannot remove God from his affairs because if not for divine intervention, he would not even be alive to celebrate this milestone.

He spoke with sombre tone when he relives an incident in February 2011 during a St Valentine Event in Warri, Delta State. According to him, a few years after his 2007 marriage to his adorable and gorgeous wife, Julie, he decided to create an event for couples whom he noticed have been going through tough times.
During the event tagged “Valentine’s Day Party” he usually assembled older couples to engage and mentor younger ones, and it was during a fireworks display to round off the ceremony at that 2011 edition that his face was almost blown and his life snuffed out.

According to him “I was standing close to a firework and it landed straight on my face. I had to undergo 13 surgeries within three months and I also had three more because the accident also affected my eardrum. There was a major crack in my eardrum.
“I was in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Shell, Warri for 10 days. I only had five minutes to stay alive if I wasn’t hurriedly taken to the hospital. That is why I believe I am a child of destiny”
Born into a large polygamous home to Chief Oritsetimileyin Japhet Pinnick and Madam Rebecca Pinnick (nee Ayomike), he grew up in an atmosphere of love and humility. His father was a top staff of UAC and rose to become one of the pioneer managers, his mother was a big-time trader and being from a prominent Warri family, “The Ayomikes” was well known.

Though he was the 15th of 19 children of his father, Pinnick revealed that there was never any rancor in their household because his father provided for them all and ensured they were all educated.
Reflecting on his family, the amiable gentleman stated “I cannot deny that he was rich. I was born into a modest home. My father was one of the first Africans to rise to the position of Manager at UAC at the time. We were well taken care off and travelled frequently.
“I believe my family should be a model for most polygamous families. My father passed on many years ago, but we have maintained peace in the household till date. I am even closer to my stepbrothers than my own direct siblings. Unlike others, we did not share my father’s properties. If anyone needs anything, he or she can make use of it. Our bond is so special.
“Whenever I see or hear of siblings fighting over their parent’s properties, I feel sad because in my family we genuinely help one another, despite being born by different mothers”
As a young boy, like many Nigerian boys, football was the No. 1 game of choice. In his case, his love affair with the beautiful game was stronger than most because he attended the famous Hussey College, Warri.

The school which produced such great Nigerians like Isaac Adaka Boro, Brig-General Mobolaji Johnson (retd), Rear Admiral Festus Porbeni (retd), Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse II was a centre of sports excellence, raising great sportsmen and women who represented the country.
Amaju was a goalkeeper and striker but his penchant for his books ensured his concentration was more on academics than sports. At Hussey College, he was an A student and so when he finished his West African School Certificate exams, he had so many options.
“With my secondary school certificate, I could study whatever I wanted. Medicine, Law or Engineering. Some people wanted me to study Law because I was a good debater in school. I won many competitions for the school and many saw men as a great public speaker.
“My aspiration was to become a Public Speaker and Pastor. While my aunt who was based in Ibadan at that time wanted me to study Medicine at the University of Ibadan, I had very good grades in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics.

According to him, his adventure into football administration was inspired by late Mr. Patrick Okpomo, a seasoned Administrator and one-time Secretary-General of the then Nigeria Football Association. Okpomo was a formidable force on football matters and well known across the country and beyond.
This was why despite everything, he decided to study Political Science and Public Administration at the University of Benin.
Incidentally, his sojourn in football actually began at the University of Benin when he was made the Team Manager of his Faculty’s football Team. Of course, he proved his mettle during the inter-faculty tournaments, and his face lights up with excitement as he recalls those days by the sidelines with classmates screaming and cheering.
After University, he worked briefly at Hallmark Bank before he was appointed Chairman, Delta State FA in 2010. He was also Senior Special Adviser to Governor on Foreign Relations and Chairman, Delta State Sports Council where he excelled.
As Sports Council Chairman, grassroots sports became his forte. Realising that different parts of the state had people with different abilities, he groomed talents in Swimming, Athletics, Football and the likes.

His dictum was always that preparation mixed with determination, resilience and the right financial support leads to success in sports. He preached this wherever he went.
It was therefore no surprise that when he threw his hat into the ring to contest for the position of NFF President in September 2014 everyone knew that he had a pure heart, little wonder, he won spectacularly because of his knack for excellence and track record of performance.
As Chairman of the NFF, he has been tried many times on financial matters but he has come out smelling like roses.  Many who are close to him said his winning formula is his outstanding leadership skills and the great ability of being a good team player.
These sterling attributes and more earned him the historic record of being the only NFF President to get a second term.
Today, Pinnick is well respected in Africa and in World Football. There is no major event that he hosts that the FIFA hierarchy is not present or represented.  This was very evident at the glamorous dinner to celebrate his 50th birthday and the Awards he has hosted.
He had been rewarded for his passion at different occasions. He has been President of the African Cup of Nations, he has been 2nd Vice President of Confederation of African Football (CAF), Executive member, CAF and 1st Vice President, CAF, Member, Organising Committee of FIFA Competitions (reputed to be the most important committee in the world football body).

To prove that he is not power hungry and always looking up to God, when everyone believed he would be the natural successor to Ghana’s Kwesi Nyantekyi as Member, FIFA Council, Pinnick abstained and the position was won by Malawi’s Walter Nyamilandu.
An epitome of humility, he was one of the young Turks that caused the revolution that led to the emergence of Ahmad Ahmad as CAF President.
As NFF President for the past six years, Pinnick revealed that it has been illuminating and challenging.
“In the past six years and eight months at the NFF, we have all worked at not only steering the ship but doing things differently. We have looked at the strategies, methods and processes and we have tried to make positive changes that would make things easier for those coming into the organization.
“We have planned, ploughed, planted, prayed and we earnestly believe that our efforts will end in praise. Nigerian football has so much potential, we believe the work we have been doing will begin to manifest very soon.
‘There have been tribulations and simulated slippery ground here and there, but we have managed to weather it all and stand tall. These trials have not been our making, but the sincerity of our desire to improve the way things are done for the good of the game has never been in doubt.

“The Congress, Executive Committee, Management and Staff have all been committed to the cause and were have stayed on course as one united and indivisible unit.”
Amaju recounted how the football governing body in Nigeria has always depended solely on government since its inception in 1945, but he and the team had devised ingenious ideas which has reduced dependency on government funds by 60 per cent! His dream before he passes on the baton is to make NFF self-sufficient.
It was during his stint that AITEO Energy Resources, a leading Energy Solutions Company became “Official Optimum Partner” of the NFF. The deal ensured that the era of unpaid salaries of national team coaches was history. AITEO also took over sponsorship of the famous FA Cup- adding glamour and colour to the nationwide competition.
Zenith Bank has also supported the Pinnick-led NFF as partner.  It was responsible for capacity building for administrators, youth development programmes and payment of coaches.
On the eve of the Russia 2018 Fifa World Cup, qualification, two partnership agreements were signed in one day with Tropical General Investments (TGI) Group as “Official Food Sponsor” of the Super Eagles and PayPorte Global Systems as “Official Online Store” of the NFF. Cocacola also sealed a 5-year deal with the NFF, becoming the “Official Soft Drink of the National Teams” while Nigeria Breweries Plc signed a N2.2 Billion deal that made its brands: Star “Official Alcoholic Beverage of the Super Eagles” and Amstel Malta “Official Malt Drink of the NFF and National teams
That was not all, Cadbury Nigeria’s brand, Tom Tom signed a deal to become “Official Candy of the Super Eagles”, while WAPIC Insurance sealed a sponsorship deal as Official Insurance Company of the NFF and the National Team and Emzor Pharmaceuticals has a long-running contract that has been retained.

In December 2017, Nigeria became the first African country to be on FIFA Connect, the centralized portal for the registration of football players and other stakeholders, this was after an engaging 2-day workshop was held in Abuja.
Under Pinnick, former Nigerian football stars have been considered for coaching positions in the various national teams. For example, Pinnick had the courage to appoint Sunday Oliseh as Super Eagles Head Coach in July 2015 but the later fell short of expectations. Former goalkeepers, Imama Amapakabor and Alloy Agwu have been in the Super Eagles, Samson Siasia coached the U-23 while Emmanuel Amuneke coached the U-17 and U-20. While Joseph Yobo is serving as Assistant Coach.
It is not in his character to be a one-way traffic who concentrates only on the men, the women have received a big boost too. It was under his watch that he encouraged the establishment of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) which has Aisha Falode as President. Florence Omagbemi, Perpetua Nkwocha and Ann Chiejine have all worked in the Super Falcons set up.
In his words this is a deliberate effort “The NFF recognizes and appreciates the great efforts of our great footballers who have done well locally and internationally for the glory of our great country. They are the most important aspect of the game because without them there will be no NFF, FIFA or sponsors. The NFF Foundation is being put in place principally to look into the welfare of these these players”

It was in this same spirit that the Federation during its 2019  NFF/AITEO Awards honoured the Super Eagles Class of 94 (which is reputed to be the most successful Nigeria National Team). It was a moving moment for the players and their families at the event held at the prestigious Eko Hotel & Suites.
Despite his achievements so far, he is not taking his eyes off the ball. For him reaching his goal is “Non-negotiable. We are determined to improve football infrastructure and facilities both at national and regional levels as can be seen by the FIFA projects across the nation.
“We are equally committed to training and retraining and enabling mass participation in the game of football which is the single biggest unifier of all peoples across several mental and physical divides and also lures boys and girls away from social vices. Not to talk about its immense international image-building component. We are passionate about the game at the grassroots.
Having built a sterling profile in football across the continent and with his NFF Presidency ending in 2022, it was widely rumoured that he would take a shot at the CAF Presidency.
But Amaju has stated in clear terms that he has no such ambition “ We are  supporting the aspiration of  Dr Patrice Motsepe of South Africa (The billionaire owner of Memolodi Sundowns  FC).We believe he has the clout and organizational savvy to take CAF from its present low level to a place of regard and respect among the six confederations of FIFA.
He however revealed that he would be taking a shot at the FIFA Council Seat “I have consulted wide and this is the route I feel comfortable taking now. Membership of FIFA Council also confers a lot of opportunity to make crucial contributions to the running of world football.

He made his declaration in a statement titled “My Journey, My Passion, My Intention” He wrote:
“Conscience is an open wound; only truth can heal it”-Uthman Dan Fodio.
“I have “picked the quote above, by the famous Islamic scholar, because it aptly captures the essence of public service and what men must be guided with in administering a sector of intense public interest such as football. There is no alternative to being true to yourself in seeking to deliver on promises made when seeking office, and this has guided every step of the journey of my life in public service.
“Following consultations far and wide and within the broad spectrum of continental and global footballing interests and concerns, I have decided to be a candidate for the FIFA Council at the next Elective Congress of the Confederation of African Football scheduled for 21st March 2021 in Rabat, Morocco.
For me, it has never been a matter of personal ambition. Always, it has been the passion for service and desire to change the old ways of things and embrace wholeheartedly the new and exciting, and more innovative and impactful ways.
“I come from a very small minority ethnic group in my native Nigeria, a part of the country known as the Niger Delta, known globally for its combustibility and ruggedness, indeed with a touch of brilliance and resilience. Scores of Nigeria’s most famous football players ever hail from the Delta region, and our football culture is enrapturing. So, I caught on to football from an early age.
From the beginning, even while contributing at the local level, I imagined myself at higher levels, making impact, giving joy to multitudes through this game that means so much to millions, billions of people. It is this passion, nurtured from adolescence, that has kept me going and working for Nigeria football despite the bricks and bats, the odds, hurdles and obstacles, and man-made challenges that would have seen men of weaker fibre throw in the towel long ago.

It is this same passion that has made me put life and limb on the line, 3 years and 8 months ago, for what I believed was a genuine collective desire for change – in the governance of African football.
In an alignment of forces with kindred spirits, we were able to effect a change at the top of African football administration, tossing out a 29-year old conservative regime. Opportunities and possibilities have been presented to the hierarchy to make positive changes since then but these have been, nonchalantly, frittered away.
For more than six years, I have worked very hard, with like minds, to effect a positive change in the administration of football in Nigeria, and this has been attested to by many. As 1st Vice President of CAF and President of the Organizing Committee of the AFCON, I know the hard work and commitment that went into enabling the 2019 AFCON finals hold in Egypt. At great personal risk, I toured all the venues in Egypt, travelling at night most of the time, all to ensure the success of the tournament, yet gave all the credit to the President.
At the unexpected turn of events (non-renewal of my tenure as 1st Vice President), I took solace in the words of Romans 8:28: “Everything worketh for good for those who love God.” I stand tall today, that every gospel of change that I preached, has been vindicated.

It is my firm belief that after 63 years of existence, the Confederation of African Football, and by extension, African football, should be in a much better position than it is presently.
My focus and vision is to be at a vantage point to contribute immensely to the renaissance of African football and African football administration, through quality contributions at football’s high table. I am aware of the immense plans and programmes of FIFA President, Mr. Gianni Infantino, for the African game, and it will take men of mettle, selflessness, clear and scientific thinking, acuity, sapience and resourcefulness to give him the support he needs to bring all those plans to fruition. In a fast –changing global environment with ever –improving technology, we must be able to adopt and adapt, upscale and upgrade and be fluid in the way we do things in order to stay relevant and competitive.
The previous season, three Africans emerged the top scorers in the English Premier League – the most exciting football league in the world. This underscores the humongous possibilities of the African game, with talents mushrooming everywhere but in need of the right structures to hone those talents, be nurtured and guided on the right path to greatness.
In remote African cities and provinces, nooks and crannies, there are dozens of Mohammed Salahs, Sadio Manes and Pierre Aubameyangs, as well as Wilfred Ndidis and Ahmed Musas to be unearthed, polished and unleashed to make tremendous impact on world football, just like the George Weahs, Tony Yeboahs, Jay Jay Okochas, Abedi ‘Pele’ Ayews, Nwankwo Kanus and Lucas Radebes before them.

However, this will take the right kind of people sitting at football’s high table and pushing Africa’s agenda with all their might and mirth, and not mere tourists who sit on the Council for the perks and sitting allowances.
Club football is the lifeblood of the game. Today, the only clubs making the finals of African competitions are almost always from one region. So, you ask, where are those famous African clubs like Canon Sportif and Tonnere Kalala of Cameroon, Hafia of Guinea, ASEC Mimosas and Africa Sports of Cote d’Ivoire, Enugu Rangers and IICC Shooting Stars of Nigeria, Gor Mahia of Kenya, Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak from Ghana?
A whole new orientation is imperative in the business of representing our esteemed continent on the FIFA Council. There is urgent and cogent need for farsighted and enlightened solutions, in tandem with the times, rather than inclination to short termism.
I fervently want to work with like minds and men of genuine calibre to restore the pride of the African, exorcise unflattering words like ‘laughing stock’ and ‘scandal’ and replace them, through hard work and enterprise, with ‘respect’ ‘probity’ and ‘transparency’.
I have a burning desire to reconnect with the basic ideals of African football, reconnect with the authentic African values in a way that Africa’s legends who toiled to make Africa great in the game will be proud once more.

We will seek to engage each Member Association on the African continent, on their peculiarities and specific needs, and proffer appreciably realistic home –grown solutions to these needs and challenges. We will travel to these places and engage the chieftains meaningfully and robustly, not for photo opportunities or mere tourism.
We must make very conscious, precise and specific efforts in our desire to attain our goals in launching Africa on the pedestal of greatness. We will escalate actions where necessary and move with the tides and times.
There is a United Nations Declaration that “sport is a veritable tool that could be used for the successful attainment and achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.” In no sport is this truer than football, with the passion and followership that it attracts, the frenzy it generates among the young and the old, and the availability of television money that can propel the game to new heights.
This is not a time for pursuing vendetta, nourishing animosity or engendering acrimony, but a time for genuine forgiveness, to completely refocus, rebuild, revitalize and rejuvenate the African game and African football administration to earn its due respect in the global sphere. It is a time to imbibe the spirit of oneness and excellence, and to have the fear of God in all our dealings.
Football is an industry with capacity to employ dozens of millions of Africa’s population, with several ancillary opportunities apart from those directly involved in playing the game, coaching, refereeing, administering, providing medical support, marketing, rights-buying, player-management, osteopath and psychology services, statistics-gathering and analysis, and journalism.

It is also an industry capable (and already doing so in the advanced climes) of contributing significantly to a country’s Gross Domestic Product. We will seek to set Africa on the way to making football the enormous industry that it is in several other places, and build a veritable future for our teeming youths who l”ove the game to bits.
I believe that with my experience, my knowledge and my passion, I can make a huge difference in the governance of football in Africa in my position as FIFA Council Member, ipso facto CAF Executive Committee Member. The voice of Africa will be heard loud and clear; and the interests of Africa will be served to the fullest.
What is more; I will be working under the leadership of one of the biggest international bodies in the world where every knowledge and experience can and will be brought to bear, especially in the areas of governance, quality service delivery, transparency, accountability, resource management and development. Such knowledge, unquantifiable, might just come to be useful over time, in the direct running of the game in the future.
I therefore humbly declare and seek the support and blessing of all, to be elected as FIFA Council Member in 2021.” The letter received accolades across the continent and he has been gathering support in the advancement of this worthy cause.
Talking about his 50th, he swung back to expression of gratitude “I give glory to God Almighty. It is a milestone and one must look back and reflect on how the journey has been. I am very happy about my journey which has been mainly about football and business.

“I am fulfilled with the tremendous success I have achieved in both, and I pray that God will continue to guide my path so that I can accomplish even greater things in all areas. There is nothing that I have achieved of my own power, strength, wisdom or intellect. Everything has been down to to God Almighty”.
Despite being a man of means, Pinnick’s has an abundant amount of human kindness flowing in his veins. Indeed, philanthropy is innate and he has involved in it from the get go when he began to make some money as a businessman, long before he entered football administration. He has been doing his thing silently away from the prying eyes of the media. His vehicle has been Brownhill Foundation where he ploughs 5 per cent of his earnings to worthy causes.
Many students have enjoyed scholarships, while former sports personalities which challenges have also benefitted. For example, Ex Super Eagles star, Wilson Oruma who was swindled and ran into hard times was rehabilitated by the foundation.

At the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic which necessitated a nationwide lockdown in Nigeria, the Foundation offered food items including rice, noodles, garri, condiments and cash of between N10,000-N15,000 to 500 families in Communities in Ogunu, Warri, Delta State.
In addition, following the death of NFF Head of ICT, Tolulope Abe, the Foundation has taken up the educational needs of his two older children while similar arrangement await the others once they are admitted into higher institutions.
And it was in this spirit of giving that he went back to his alma mater, Hussey College as part of his 50th birthday celebration to make a huge donation.

AT THE REGAL AND COLOURFUL CORONATION OF ONIRU OF IRULAND, OBA ABDULWASIU OMOGBOLAHAN LAWAL IN VICTORIA ISLAND, LAGOS

Iru Kingdom, located in Victoria Island, Lagos was thrown into mourning on September 19, 2019 when Oba Idowu Abiodun Oniru passed on at the age of 82, but eight months later after a thorough search and healthy competition, sadness turned to joy with the announcement that urbane and astute public servant, Prince Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal of the Abisogun and Akiogun Ruling Houses will be new Monarch.

The announcement by the government was followed with a formal presentation of staff of office and instrument of appointment by Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, making Oba Lawal, who will be known as Abisogun II, the 15th Oniru of Iruland.

Though many traditional rites had been carried out, the ceremonies were rounded off with a spectacular coronation event that was upscale and regal. It was filled with a rich display of the kingdom’s culture and tradition.

Thereafter, the new Oba who was joined by his gorgeous and graceful wife, Olori Maryam, in his full regalia, complete with beaded crown and instrument of office, took centre stage.

An elated Oba Lawal stated “Today begins another significant chapter in the annals of our dear Iruland as well as my life’s journey. Personally, this brings to my mind the complexity of life as espoused by Garth Nix who said and I quote “Does the Walker choose the path, or the path, the walker”. I am convinced that all these were in the pre-determined plans of Almighty Allah, who makes us as pencils in His magnificent hands.

“I started from the Palace in 1977 precisely, then went out of the Palace, and Lagos to other places, only now to arrive back here in the palace where I will remain until I join my ancestor”

Oba Lawal paid glowing tribute to his late dad, Chief Taurid Omobolaji Lawal-Akapo, Ojora of Lagos (1977-1993) and his sweet mother, Olori Kemi Lawal Akapo for their special love and strict upbringing which had helped him over the years.

While expressing his deepest appreciation for all the encomiums and prayers showered on him since he was named the Oniru, Oba Lawal, a three-time member of the State Executive Council, went ahead to unveil his economic development plan for the kingdom, titled:  Let’s Develop Iruland Together condensed in the acronym “LeGIt”.

In his remarks, Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat described traditional institutions as “indispensable branch” of Yoruba society, stressing that the socio-economic growth witnessed in Iru Kingdom in the last two decades had contributed in no small measure to the development of Lagos.

Mr Governor commended the monarch for keeping peace and for sustaining the effort to unite members of the royal families after ascending the throne.

The Governor said he looked forward to more rewarding development activities in Iru land, but urged residents to rally round the Oniru and maintain peace in order to achieve the monarch’s outlined objectives.

Sanwo-Olu said he had absolute confidence in the leadership ability of Oba Lawal to transform the kingdom into a 21st century city of commerce and culture, urging him to bring his wealth of experience in public service to bear in the administration of Iru land.

According to the Governor “During the installation ceremony in June, I enjoined the Oniru to strengthen the existing bond of unity within Iru land for the overall development of peace and progress of this kingdom. Two months on the throne, I’m pleased to note that the monarch took this advice to heart as exemplified by his very impressive actions characterised by wisdom, knowledge and large heartedness.

The speech making segment was rounded off by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu who eulogized the monarch and called for unity among Lagosians.

Thereafter, the venue exploded into a full party scene with good music, choice beverages and gourmet dishes flowing freely till late into the night.

CHIEF (SIR) GABRIEL OSAWARU IGBINEDION CELEBRATES 86TH BIRTHDAY IN GRAND STYLE

Just as he has been doing for many years now, influential business titan and Esama of Benin Kingdom, His Excellency Sir (Chief) Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion literarily shut down Benin City, the capital of Edo State when he celebrated his 86th birthday.

The ever stylish and colourful Esama, who never settles for anything but the very best, despite scaling down festivities due to the global COVID-19 pandemic still attracted hundreds of thousands in the course of the week-long celebration.

This year, Chief Igbinedion began his programme with an intellectually-stimulating birthday lecture on September 3, 2020 at Nigeria’s  numero uno private university, Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State.

The Guest lecturer was none other than His Excellency Dr Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, former Governor of Gombe State who spoke on the topic “ “Globalisation and the future of Tertiary Education in Nigeria”

According to the Guest Lecturer “To be invited to deliver the 86th Birthday Lecture of this distinguished and illustrious Son of Africa, His Excellency Sir Chief (Dr.) Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin Kingdom is indeed to me, aunique privilege and an honour. I thank the authorities of the Igbinedion University especially The Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor and the Governing Council, Vice Chancellor, Senate and Congregation, the Academic community, the Administrative staff and all the students of this university for this recognition, I am deeply honoured to have been invited to join you on this auspicious occasion of the 86th Birthday Celebration of the Esama of the Universe of Igbinedion UniversityOkada.”.

Today’s lecture is captured “Globalization and the Future of Tertiary Education in Nigeria”. The choice of this Birthday Lecture topic is quite deliberate and highly instructive. First, the celebrant is an international business colossus, great patriot, educationalist, philanthropist and pathfinder. He has been operating businesses at a global level for several decades before the concept and issue of globalization began to gain worldwide attention. He, in a way, is a globalized person including in marriage.

He then went on to explore such sub-topics as: Nigeria educational policies, current educational policies, history of globalization, the impact of globalization, cross border education, mobility of students and lecturers, the Push Factor, future takeaways and deliverables and then rounded off thus: “In Nigeria today, most of our best eleven are professionals and expatriates working in different parts of the world in which significant number got there via internationalization or globalization. Nigeria must therefore design some deliberate policies to combat theattrition rate by putting in place a reward mechanism for those thatchoose to return, improve the quality and standard of education in thecountry to world class status and erect some international bureaucratic barriers that could discourage foreign studies and enhance effective utilisation of human mental resources within the knowledge economy.

An empirical validation of actual number of Nigerians lost through this phenomenon and an understanding of the real push-pull factors shouldbe carried out and investigated.

“ I congratulate the celebrant, the Great Esama of Bini Kingdom, his family and friends on this day of joy. For the Celebrant today, I cannot resist saying my favourite prayer for you; as your days, so shall yourstrength, your wisdom and favour with God Insha Allah.

EX BEAUTY QUEEN NIKE OSHINOWO SPEAKS EXCLUSIVELY TO OVATION ABOUT LIFE, LOVE AND TURNING 55

Whatever time of the day and whichever part of the world you meet Adenike Asabi Oshinowo popularly known as Nike Oshinowo, you cannot but be wowed. Her beauty is that real and timeless.

Raised in Ibadan and London, the lady once described by a celebrity journal as the sexiest woman alive has moved from being a beauty queen, restaurateur, fitness expert to pageant organizer, traditional title holder, wife and mother.

Ever since she entered our consciousness in the early 90s as the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria 90/91, she has continued to be a newsmaker. Though she hardly speaks, any time she does, she never fails to impress with her intellectual depth and candor.

In this special interview to mark her 55th birthday, Nike Oshinowo opens up about life, love and future plans.

What has been happening to Nike Oshinowo, you just dropped off the radar

I don’t know about dropping off the radar (Laughs heartily)

I needed to figure out where my true priorities laid. I had these two precious gifts I had been given – My Twins ; and I very much wanted to be part of their lives: fully.

Being a ‘celebrity’ mum or a Society mum or even a ‘Yummy Mummy’ just didn’t have much appeal to me.

As in all other situations, something’s gotta give . In my case what went was the partying and the social butterfly aspect of my lifestyle!

Is it true you now live permanently in the UK. If so what happened

My twins now attend Prep School in the UK and I want to be with them.

So I commute.

I essentially live in both countries -Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

It made for a heck of a lot of flying Pre COVID-19.

Like everyone else, I’m having to reevaluate our Pre pandemic lifestyle and make the necessary adjustments.

It is what it is.

Many years after you were a beauty queen, you tried to revamp the Beauty Pageant business. Tell us about that experience

Yes I ran the Miss Nigeria Pageant for a period of three years when its parent company- The Daily Times of Nigeria was taken over by Folio Communications.

During my three year stint, we were able to successfully rebrand the pageant and also successfully organized two shows.

That period remains the most hectic period of my life. My team and I toured Nigeria in a bid to reintroduce the Miss Nigeria brand to the Nation.

We garnered a phenomenal amount of support from both the people and the Nigerian Press which eventually translated into sponsorship deals.

But seriously, I don’t think I slept a wink in those three years !

Who are your role models and why

Sadly, I no longer look for or look to or even believe in role models.

We’re all such imperfect and complex beings…

Growing up my role models varied from Diana Ross and Princess Diana to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis , Mother Theresa and my mother .Then you read thier Biographies and disappointment sets in.

Now I find inspiration in everyday people and everyday occurrences. In the simplicity of nature and creation. Even in my 7year olds. Their adaptability and can do spirit. I’ve learnt a lot from them. It’s rather humbling….

I am told you will be 55, wow. How does it feel to be just 5 years away from 60

I’m 55 in December. In fact , by the time this publication is out I’ll officially be 55years old !

I love being 55. I love that I’m being given  the opportunity to live a completely different life from what I had before . It is a huge privilege and I’m beyond grateful.

I look forward to what 60years of age brings. Hopefully it will include good health and an abundance of Grace.

What are the key things you have learnt from life at 50

Just one very big lesson: That it’s ok to do it My Way !I’ve torn up the rule books and I’m just living the way I choose.

This is no flattery, you look stunning for your age. Let us into your beauty secret.

The first thing I noticed when I saw the pictures from the photo shoot was how much ‘lockdown weight’ I was still carrying.

And I’m ok with it.

The secret is : There is no secret.

I often sleep in my makeup because I’m too tired to wash my face before I fall into bed at night!

I eat all the things I’m not supposed to albeit in moderation.

I live simply and enjoy my life. Fortunately that involves exercise-a fair amount of walking and jogging.

In Lagos I jog across the Lekki-Ikoyi bridge at 6 every morning. In the UK, I walk and run in Ashdown Forest .

How will you describe your personal style

Simple, comfortable but always elegant.

THE REGAL WEDDING OF ADESEKEMI ADEREMI AND ANTHONY ATUCHE IN LAGOS

The ceremony was an exhibition of culture and class.
What made the occasion spectacular was that despite the fact that the couple are from different ethnic groups and cultures, the conviviality and air of friendship at the venue was really heart-warming.Little wonder that everyone confessed that they had loads of fun.
