Four Reasons to Watch Fantastic Four

By Samantha Ofole-Prince
Here are four reasons Marvel Studios’ “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is a must-see summer blockbuster.
The Storyline:
It’s a retro-futuristic film which has four individuals with superpowers trying to save Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus. The central theme of the film is family.  It introduces Marvel’s First Family as they balance their roles as heroes with the familial drama audiences will relate to. They are superheroes with normal problems and relatable human flaws like insecurities and fears, which resonate. In the film, they face their most daunting challenge yet in taking down MCU’s biggest villain who resembles Buddha and “Transformers” Optimus Prime. There’s also a tense scene of a baby born in Space with the help of gravity.
The Characters:
Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic (Pedro Pascal), can stretch his body, Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby), can become invisible and project force fields, Johnny Storm/Human Torch (Joseph Quinn) can generate flames and fly, and Ben Grimm/The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) is a powerful, rocky powerhouse. The characters, who gained their powers after being exposed to cosmic radiation during a space mission, deliver strong performances and engaging antics. It also stars British actress Sarah Niles who plays their Chief of Staff.  Galactus, who has ominous plans to destroy the entire planet, is played by Ralph Ineson and Julia Garner as the metallic Silver Surfer is memorable. She delivers the deadly message of Earth’s fate.
The Action:
The action takes place in Space and a retro style New York City and as the quartet battle to save their home from extinction, there are some thrilling action sequences. There’s a really cool race in Space, plenty of explosive battles and a creative use of the powers of each character.
The Set:
Directed by Matt Shakman, it’s its own universe and is a visual and nostalgic delight. The world being portrayed is unique. It has all the retro future elements complete with futuristic buildings and quirky robots that are fun to watch.  The set design, the costumes, and tech all feel like they were pulled from the golden age of comics, and it gives this new chapter in the MCU its own visual identity.
“The Fantastic Four: First Steps” opens in theaters July 25. Be sure to stay for the two post-credit scenes.
