THE GLAMOUR, THE GLITZ, THE FANFARE OF OVATION CAROL 2019

It was another memorable evening of pulsating fun and entertainment as Ovation Carol took Lagos by storm, thrilling everyone with a good mix of gospel and circular music.

Held at the Eko Convention Centre,  Victoria Island, Lagos, the Ovation Carol sponsored by Esther Ajayi Foundation lived up to its billing as the biggest annual event of the year featuring the biggest and brightest stars in Africa’s music industry.

The 13th edition of the fiesta kicked off from the creatively decorated red carpet which was crafted by Mr Kingsley James-owned IDCL, the scenery was also enhanced by personnel of Fotofast led by Miss Tobi Enitan (they mounted their latest gadgets to capture guests at the event for posterity) With beautiful array of designs depicting past editions of Ovation International Magazine and memorable moments in the history of Ovation Group as backdrop, the whole area was a lovely.

Kick starting the show officially was the magnificent performance of the highly rated Hymnodia Choir.

With carols and hymns, Hymnodia Choir took the audience on a musical journey, no one was in doubt that Christmas was in the air with the superlative rendition of the choir, which was appreciated with a wondrous applause.

With ebullient comedian and broadcast personality, Okey Bakassi as Compere, the evening moved on smoothly. Okey kept his jokes short and simple and ensured that the organiser’s concept of more music and less talk was achieved.

One of the speeches was from the Chief Host and Chairman, Ovation Media Group, Bashorun Dele Momodu. He told the cheering audience to brace up for the an exciting evening while delving down memory lane on the journey of Ovation as an entity and Ovation Carol as ‘one of the reasons Lagos is the most important city in Africa’.

Bashorun Momodu’s address was later  followed with remarks from the event sponsor and Founder of Esther Ajayi Foundation, Reverend Mother Esther Ajayi. Her invitation was heralded by a thunderous ovation, signifying her acceptability as an amiable woman of faith, whose stock in trade is giving.

Delivering her speech in company of her husband, Reverend (Dr.) Ademuyiwa Ajayi, the renowned philanthropist acknowledged the good work of Ovation Media Group has been associated with over the years. She paid glowing tributes to Ovation Founder, Bashorun Momodu whom she described as a man of integrity with a good heart. She called on all who are in doubt about her source of wealth to ask questions instead of dwelling in gossip, adding that her Foundation will continue to sponsor the Ovation Carol for the next 10 years, at least.

The stage was then set for the lively evening with rising stars Gypsy, Jimi Abduls, Fresh L Wole DSB, Koye Sax,  Aramide and Rema setting the pace. They were followed by back to back by the continent’s super stars.

Rave of the moment and Grammy Nominee, Burna Boy, ensured there the audience were kept on their toes. Right from when he was announced, through to his last song, he was phenomenal. Burna, just like last year, was the star of the evening.

Free spirited Teni also ranked her in the minds of the audience, she was greeted with enthusiasm by as many of those who ‘want to be a billionaire’. She literally commanded and controlled her stage like it was second nature.

During the performance of her hit ‘wait for me’, Teni practically dragged ‘one fine bobo’ up stage, and pretended she was proposing to him.  The young man, who turned out to be Wahab Okoya, the teenage son of billionaire businessman, Alhaji Razak Okoya, did not respond to her love advances. He just stood still, taking pictures, while ignoring Teni’s seductive moves. But the crowd was greatly thrilled by this spontaneous action and screamed with delight.

That was not all, street hop master and rapper, Olamide fondly called Badoo was soon to mount the stage and he also gave a good account of himself. Rude boy, one half of the former Psquare was also on stage and he too did not disappoint.

The organisers of the carol also gave its platform to evergreen acts like Elegant Stallion, Onyeka Onwenu and “Omoge” crooner, Mike Okri. They both took many in the audience down memory lane and it was refreshing to see many sing along to some of the tunes.

Gospels acts also came in full force from the energetic Testimony, spiritually-stimulating instagram sensation, Funke Akinokun to the dramatic Tim Godfrey, and afrocentric saxophonist, Mike Aremu, they all served a full course of food for the soul.

The high point of the evening which was produced by Chaterhouse was the presentation of awards and induction of prominent achievers into the Ovation Hall of Fame. The first to be inducted was ace photographer and the real “Mr. Do All”, Sunmi Smart-Cole.

Reading the recipient’s citation before the award was presented, a former aide of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Dr. Rueben Abati, noted that Smart-Cole has practically conquered the field of photography, became a barber and rose to become the Managing Editor at The Guardian.

The 78 years old Smart-Cole received his award from the Minister of Transport, Rt Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi in company of the Chief Executive Officer, Ovation Media Group, Bashorun Dele Momodu.

In his response, Sunmi Smart-Cole, while expressing his gratitude to Ovation, stated that through photography, he has been privileged to hold exhibitions in five continents, travelled to 28 countries, gained fame and met many Presidents and Heads of State.

The next recipient was Afro juju originator, Sir Shina Peters, who couldn’t hide his joy at being selected for the award. The award was presented to the ace singer by top academic, Prof Wale Adebanwi in the presence of Dr. Rueben Abati and CEO, Ovation Media Group, Chief Dele Momodu.

Expressing his appreciation to the Ovation Group and Chief Momodu, SSP as he is fondly called exclaimed, ‘I’m fulfilled’.

The trio joined the likes of former President of Ghana, HE John Dramani Mahama, Founder of Esther Ajayi Foundation and prolific giver, Reverend Esther Abimbola Ajayi and Chief Alex Duduyemi as inductees of the Ovation Hall of Fame.

The interment was a private affair attended by only the Nkanang family. The air around the burial site was sombre as they all bade farewell to the giant of a man. It was a befitting farewell for a well-loved patriarch.

The day’s event was rounded off with a well-planned reception which held at various venues across the town.

The funeral ceremony was rounded off with a thanksgiving service the very next day at the Qua Iboe Church, Awa-Iman. A testament to the tremendous goodwill enjoyed by the Akwa Ibom Governor and members of the family was the fact that hundreds including Governors attended the service which was a most befitting farewell to the great icon.

Elder Gabriel Emmanuel Nkanang was born into a very pious Christian Family on a Monday, May 27 1929. His family trained him in the way of the Lord (Prov 22:6) and throughout his life he did not depart from it.

Later, the foundations of his faith were strengthened by his association with missionaries. The missionaries, who appreciated his love for God and appetite for education, deepened his eschatological knowledge and encouraged his pursuit of western education. As he grew in favour with God and with man, his determination to serve God also grew. Within this context of faith and service, he discovered his purpose as a Christian and saw himself as a humble actor playing his role in a divine script written by God Almighty.

Whenever he encountered any downturn, he encouraged himself in the Lord by reading and making reference to Jeremiah 1:5 (Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart and I appointed you as a prophet to the nations’’) and Romans 8:29-30 (for those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son… And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified, he also glorified).

To some, teaching was just a profession, but to Pa, teaching (especially children) was more than a profession- it was a ministry and a calling. It is allegorical that the birthday of this iconic lover of children would later be declared Children’s Day by the Nigerian Government after it was proclaimed four years earlier (1925) in Geneva. In dealing with his pupils as a headmaster and educationist, he embodied knowledge, virtue, wit and compassion. With steady gait, dexterous hands and razor-sharp mind, he showed children in darkness the light of the Gospel; he gave hope to the hopeless and strength to the weary. He was adept at making concrete even the most abstract of situations. In the schools where he taught, he kept the children on their toes by insisting that any child could be asked to preach at the morning assembly. This “policy” literally forced all children to read their Bibles and they always came to school prepared with a scripture to share. He was the life President of Awa Students Association Worldwide.

While he labored in his teaching profession, he balanced his time with providing leadership to his community and discharging his duties and responsibilities as an elder of the Qua Iboe Church. He also worked assiduously in the tasks of spreading the gospel, going beyond his community to places as far flung as the Middle-Belt region of the country, thereby playing an important role in the formation of and mentoring of very many people within the Church and outside. A good number of them have gone ahead to attain various levels of success. Pa believed that education was the panacea for the development and actively campaigned for it at every conceivable opportunity.

Pa Nkanang was a man ahead of his time. He was impatient with failure yet calculated, abstract yet concrete, and he had an unusual craving for knowledge. His commitment to family, people and society will remain one of his indelible footprints.

He trusted and believed in the inherent willingness of people to give their best for the common good; and saw this as a function of opportunity, trust, motivation, empowerment and taking responsibility. His usual refrain was that those who are more successful in life are those that had the most opportunities, realized and taken advantage-and not those who are necessarily more gifted or more brilliant. Even more, he would say, ‘’the race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favour to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all’’. Perhaps, one of Elder Gabriel Nkanang’s most important traits was his resilience or adversity quotient. He will be missed by his children, grand children and great grand children.

THE SPECTACULAR FUNERAL OF MADAM BEATRICE OKONMAH IN DELTA STATE

It was a bitter-sweet experience for the family, friends and associates of Mrs Beatrice Ogugua Okonmah (Nee Okwedinbu) when she was honoured with a most befitting burial in the ancient town of Ibusa, Delta State.

The amiable matriarch’s passing elicited bitterness because she impacted so many people during her life time and her death has left a gap in their lives while they expressed joy while reminiscing on her worthy life as a committed Christian which invariably meant that she will be spending eternity in heaven.
Madam Okonmah who died at the ripe old age of 81 years began her final journey to the great beyond with a wake keep mass at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Ibusa.
The pastoral team that day included Rev. Father Stanley Aseigbu-Parish Priest, Rev. Father Paulinus Ukabiala and Rev. Father Azubuike Ikemenka.
It was with the popular hymn, “The Solid Rock” which begins with the verses “ My hope is built on nothing else than Jesus blood and righteousness” that the service began. It was a very apt hymn for the occasion because it encapsulated the life and times of the late Mrs Okonmah whose faith was anchored on Christ and worked in the vineyard of the Lord till he last breath.
The solemn ceremony also witnessed prayers and readings from such Bible passages as Daniel 12: 1-3. Psalm 42: 2 and Romans 5: 5-11 and was rounded off with the recessional hymn “I’m Going Home At last.
The day after, the funeral service for the deceased took place at the same Church in Ibusa, Delta State and this was where the clout and connection of the family came to fore.
Indeed, the whole town literally stood still as guests poured in from all over the globe, her last daughter, Dr. Wendy Uzolo Uwaje who flew in from her base in the United States was supported by many of her friends from way back and they formed a strong support system throughout the occasion.
The church ceremony kicked off as soon as her remains were brought to the front of the church, by the pallbearers. At the entrance, the Officiating Priest offered some prayers before her casket was ferried into the church.

FAMILY AND FRIENDS BID FAREWELL TO DR. GABRIEL BABATUNDE TIYAMIYU

Death be not proud, though some have called thee mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so…”This John Donne poem was most likely on the minds of the family members of Chief Gabriel Babatunde Awoyele Tiyamiyu, an exemplary Nigerian businessman and philanthropist as they mourned his passing to greater glory.
It was obvious that they were sad at the sudden death of their patriarch but they are comforted by the fact that not only has he left footprints on the sands of time, he also served God with so much gusto that he would be resting in bosom of the Lord.
That was reason his family rallied to give the consummate businessman who is the Adeyoruwa of Iperu-Remo, Ogun State and the Alokoso West Region a very grand and befitting burial.
His funeral was a two day affair that began with a Christian Wake coordinated by the Church of the Lord (Prayer Fellowship) where the late Chief Tiyamiyu was a distinguished Baba Ijo. The very sombre occasion was well organised as very inspirational hymns were sang while there was many segments created for prayers.
It was also here that family and friends were invited for testimonies and the deceased was showered with encomiums by various speakers. He was described in endearing terms. Whole some said he was a friendly grassroots politician and community leader, others said he was a cheerful giver who gave without expecting anything in return. He was also said to be a caring father and a man of exceptional integrity.
The following day began at the funeral service which was held at the Chapel of Ebony Vaults & Garden, Ikoyi, Lagos. The service was anchored by Archbishop Moses Olasewo who gave a homily encouraging the congregation to commit to serving God because it was inevitable that everyone will die.
He said that when one is serving God, death is not the end because the children of God were set for another life which is better and more enduring that the one on earth. The service was smooth and was not long before it was rounded off with prayers.
After his interment, guests were hosted to a sumptuous reception at Habour Point, Victoria Island, Lagos and guests were thrilled till late by Faith Band.

THE GLAMOROUS WEDDING OF UCHECHUKWU IWUAJOKU AND FUNMILAYO ABODERIN IN LAGOS

It was simply classy, glamorous and certainly superlative. Yes, there was nothing but the best on display at the upscale wedding of Olufunmilayo Rabiat Aboderin and Uchechukwu Ajibola Iwuajoku.
When news broke that the silverspoon kids who both schooled in the United Kingdom were an item, everyone knew that their wedding will be mega because they are both from two prominent and influential Nigerian families.
The beautiful bride’s father, Dolapo is from the prominent Aboderin Family of Ibadan Oyo State. He is a connected businessman. Her mother, Mrs. Lolade Aboderin apart from being the daughter of late businessman, Chief Abolade Abimbola is a top purveyor of diamonds and jewelry, her brand Olola Luxury is well known among the rich and famous.
On his part, the dashing groom is the son of foremost businessman and silent billionaire, Mr Sam Iwuajoku while his mother is Yeye Omobolanle Folakemi Oduntan, who interestingly is a diamond merchant.
The wonderful couple knew deep into the relationship that they had a future together as one body and one soul,, little wonder they chose #TheFUCHure as hashtag throughout their celebration of love.
It was as expected the hottest wedding in town that weekend as Nigeria’s rich and famous turned out for this occasion, virtually everybody who was somebody in Nigeria’s business and political circles was there.
The wedding ceremonies took place at the famous Harbour Point Victoria Island, Lagos. The first was the engagement where the Yoruba culture of the bride and the Igbo tradition of the groom mixed. It was a very convivial occasion that was rounded off with a pulsating performance by the Juju King, King Sunny Ade.
Pastor Wale Adefarasin’s Guiding Light Assembly, Ikoyi, Lagos was the venue for their solemnization and he was there to personally join Funmi and Uche as man and wife.
He admonished them before they said “I do” and exchanged rings, to communicate regularly, be each other’s best friend and never leave God out of their affairs.
It was after they went to a part of the church to sign the marriage register accompanied by their parents that the couple was formally introduced to the congregation with so much fanfare. They were received with a wonderful applause.
Throughout the ceremony, it was noticeable that the pair was truly into each other and in love, they kept cooing into each other’s ears, exchanging glances and generally having fun.
It was after this this spiritual seal of approval and fortification that the couple, their families and friends headed to Habour Point again for the Wedding reception.
The venue had been creatively transformed by the inimitable Uche Majekodunmi of Newton & David, who was the event planner. Guests were pampered like royals. Choice drinks and gourmet dishes of various kinds flowed freely.
Otunba Bimbo Ogunbanjo, President, Nigeria Stock Exchange was the Chairman of the occasion and in his remarks he noted that he had known the fathers of the couple for over 30 years, and was elated to be the Chairman at the auspicious occasion. He went on to urge the couple to allow God guide them as they embark on the journey. He noted that the wedding was just an event but marriage was a journey and they needed the grace of God to navigate it successfully.
What could be described as the highest point of this wedding reception was not the cutting of the cake which was supervised by Princess Vicky Haastrup, it was what transpired during the dance session. It was very emotional.
The bride’s father decided to send her forth to her husband by belting a sonorous tune with his saxophone, Mr Dolapo Aboderin rocked with is daughter for minutes and the bond was so infectious. This father/daughter performance was matched and even surpassed by Uche and his mother, because when they took centre stage to dance, they shed loving tears. Oh !what a genuine expression of affection.
The great reception dovetailed into a  high octane after party. The couple who had changed to more comfortable outfits danced with their friends till very late.
