Paramount Pictures has released the film trailer and cast images for Adeyemi’s vivid and inspirational story which follows a young African woman on a quest to reclaim the magic that was violently stolen from her people.
The film is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. A known force who champions for Black female protagonists.
Bythewood’s previous projects include “Beyond the Lights,” and the historical epic “The Woman King,” about an all-female warrior unit that protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey.
Featuring a stellar, studded cast of Black characters, many of which are strong Black female leads, the cast includes South African actress Thuso Mbedu[http://Thuso Mbedu] as Zélie, the main protagonist.
“Children of Blood and Bone” reunites Mbedu, who played Nawi in “The Woman King” with Viola Davis and Lashana Lynch who also starred in the film, which earned major recognition including the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) Best Picture and an NAACP Image Award for Davis.
Zackary Momoh, Nigerian actor Richard Mofe-Damijo, Damson Idris, Amandla Stenberg, Tosin Cole also star in this upcoming drama which includes Oscar winner Cynthia Erivo who plays Admiral Kaea and British actress Lashana Lynch who we last saw playing Bob Marley’s wife in the biopic “One Love.”
Heavyweights Chiwetel Ejiofor, Regina King, Idris Elba and Viola Davis as Mama Agba round up the cast in the movie which was filmed in South Africa.
Burna Boy serves as executive music consultant on the film which features music from Tems.
Filled with African rituals and characters facing deep conflicts, the film is set in the epic fantasy world of Orïsha and Adeyemi drew heavily from West African mythology.
The film releases in theaters on January 15, 2027.
